It’s the new trend in terrorism – create a front organization and call it a political party or other entity of some sort. Following the tactics of the Palestinian Authority and the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas is developing a diplomatic corps.
The Muslim Brotherhood has been successful in reconfiguring itself as a political party, even to the extent of electing one of their own as the new President of Egypt. The Palestinian Authority has been playing the politics game, attempting to gain entrance into the United Nations, although it is not a nation state. It has established a political center in the West Bank in an effort to impose its “nationhood” on the rest of the world.
In the latest development, Egypt, headed by a former Muslim Brotherhood leader, has agreed to allow Hamas to open a political mission in Cairo. Hamas and the Egyptian government have also formed a joint security committee to address the lawlessness along the Egypt/Gaza border.
These moves are designed to establish the legitimacy of yet another terrorist organization. The absurdity is not that these three terrorist organizations are trying to portray themselves as legitimate political entities. (Check out our recent article “Terrorists in Suits and Ties” for more information.) The absurdity is that anyone at all would believe them. Yet people do. Diplomats do. Entire national regimes do. There is even speculation that US President Obama is behind the scenes helping to pave the way for full political recognition of Hamas, the purpose of which would be to declare the independence of Gaza.
It was less than a year ago when Hamas high-tailed it out of Damascus, leaving it with no base of operations outside of the West Bank. Now President Mahmoud Morsi has opened his arms and the doors to a new headquarter location in east Cairo. This will provide it a base of operations in partnership with or under the control of the Muslim Brotherhood in a concerted attempt to ply away land that legally belongs to Israel.
In addition to discussing the security of the Egypt/Israeli (Gaza) border, Hamas will petition Cairo to establish a free-trade zone near the Rafah border crossing. Hamas will also make a request to connect directly to the Egyptian power grid, thereby allowing it to become independent of the Israeli electrical supply. In return for these discussions, the Times of Israel reports that Hamas has agree to turn over to Egypt suspects who allegedly participated in the border attack and intrusion into Israel while killing 8 Egyptian solders in the process.
The Bible warns that in the latter days perilous times will come (2 Timothy 3:1). Perilous means “troublesome” or “dangerous.” Israel certainly understands what peril means. It is, frankly, difficult to imagine living in a country surrounded by other nations whose objectives are to keep the people frightened, to terrorize them, and to ultimately wipe them off the face of the earth.
There is no telling what tomorrow holds. But we, as Christians, know who holds tomorrow. We invite you to pray with us for the peace of Jerusalem. We invite you to have a heart that is tender towards the people whom Jehovah called to be His special people, the people through whom salvation would come to this world. Pray with us, please.
